Just talk to every NPC, exhaust their dialogue and summon them 3 times, they have to survive the boss battle. You should be able to recognize their names. All the other NPC signs from NPCs that you haven't met as a real person don't have any questline. Some minor NPCs tell you what to do to fulfill their quest, like Vengarl's Head tells you to. It IS possible to summon dark phantoms (red). These will be changed by the chasm into Abyssal Spirits, giving the invader the same pure black appearance as everyone else. While you're an abyss spirit you can attack the other npc abyss spirits. You can not join the summoner for the boss fight, however.
